Different forms of 'To be' verb

Improve your Vocabulary

"To be"  is a common verb form we encounter regularly. This story will inform you about different forms of 'to be' verb.

"To be" verbs can be linking verbs that help describe the subject of a sentence or auxiliary verbs that help generate other tenses.

It can be expressed as 'am', 'are',  'is' , 'was', or 'were', depending on the subject or tense.

The simple present and simple past tenses are the ones where the verb "to be" is most frequently used.

Simple Present

Singular:  I (am), You (are), he/she/it (is)

Plural : We (are), You (are), They (are)

Simple Past

Singular: I (was), You (were), he/she/it (was)

Plural : We (were), You (were), They (were)

However, unlike the past and present tenses, the future tenses do not use 'to be' directly.  Instead, it uses the modal verb "will".

Similarly, we use the bare infinitive 'be' with all modal verbs, such as 'can', 'should', 'might', & 'must'.  For example:  It can be easy if you help.

For the  present & past participle, the 'to be' verb is used twice - first as an auxiliary verb and second as a present participle.

For example:

1. She is being jealous. 2. The men were being worried unnecessarily.
