"To be" verbs can be linking verbs that help describe the subject of a sentence or auxiliary verbs that help generate other tenses.
It can be expressed as
'am'
,
'are'
,
'is' ,
'was',
or
'were'
, depending on the subject or tense.
The simple present and simple past tenses are the ones where the verb "to be" is most frequently used.
Simple Present
Singular:
I (am), You (are), he/she/it (is)
Plural :
We (are), You (are), They (are)
Simple Past
Singular:
I (was), You (were), he/she/it (was)

However, unlike the past and present tenses, the future tenses do not use '
to be
' directly.
Instead, it uses the modal verb "will".
Similarly, we use the bare infinitive '
be
' with all modal verbs, such as 'can', 'should', 'might', & 'must'.
For example:
It can be easy if you help.
For the
present & past participle
, the 'to be' verb is
used twice
- first as an auxiliary verb and second as a present participle.
For example:
1. She is being jealous.
2. The men were being worried unnecessarily.
