How to Use Passive Voice?

Improve your Vocabulary

Master the art of using "passive voice" through this story as we delve into the details of how to use it.

In passive voice, the focus is on the action's target. The sentence gets flipped, and the verb is now acting upon the subject.

Every sentence in the passive voice contains two verbs.  1. A conjugated form of “to be” 2. the main verb’s past participle.

Let's see how to use it!  The cake was baked by the chef.  The focus is on the action's target, cake and the subject is being acted upon by the verb, was baked.

Have a look at when to use it:  The passive voice should be used in sentences where it is important to highlight the recipient or action, not the subject or object.

Why use it?  Passive voice has subtler tone, useful for focusing on the action being described or the action’s target.

Where to use it?  Where the focus is on: 1.The recipient of the action 2. The action itself 3. To conceal/downplay the doer of the action 4. To sound more formal

Examples  1. The window was broken by the wind.  2. The book was read by the children.
