How to write a great resume

Writing a great resume is essential for securing job interviews and making a positive impression on potential employers.  Here are steps and tips to help you create an effective resume:

Choose the Right Format

Decide on the resume format that best suits your background and career goals. Common formats include chronological, functional, and combination (hybrid).

Contact Information

Include your full name, phone number, professional email address, and LinkedIn profile (if applicable). Avoid using unprofessional email addresses.

Resume Header

Create a clear and concise resume header with your name in a larger font size than the rest of the text.

Summary or Objective Statement

Write a brief summary or objective statement that highlights your career goals and key qualifications. Tailor it to the specific job you're applying for.

Professional Experience

– List your work experience in reverse chronological order (most recent job first). Include the following for each position: Job title Company name and location Dates of employment Bulleted list of key responsibilities and achievement – Use action verbs to describe your accomplishments and quantify results whenever possible.

Education

Include your educational background, starting with your most recent degree. Include the degree earned, institution, location, graduation date, and any relevant honors or certifications.

Skills

Highlight your skills, both technical and soft, that are relevant to the job. Organize them into sections, such as "Technical Skills" and "Soft Skills."

Achievements and Awards

Mention any significant achievements, awards, or recognitions that demonstrate your excellence in your field.

Professional Memberships and Associations

Include memberships in relevant professional organizations, indicating your commitment to your industry.

Relevant Projects or Portfolio

If applicable, showcase your work by including a section highlighting relevant projects, links to an online portfolio, or GitHub repository.

Languages

If you speak multiple languages, list them and indicate your proficiency level.

Volunteer Work or Community Involvement

Mention any volunteer work or community involvement that is relevant to your career or showcases valuable skills.

Customize for Each Job Application

Tailor your resume for each job application by emphasizing the skills and experiences that align with the specific job requirements.

Proofread and Edit

Carefully proofread your resume to eliminate grammatical errors, typos, and inconsistencies. Consider seeking feedback from others.

Use a Clean and Professional Design

Choose a clean and easy-to-read font, use bullet points for readability, and maintain a consistent format throughout your resume.

Keep it Concise

Aim for a resume length of one to two pages, focusing on the most relevant and impactful information.

Use Keywords

Incorporate relevant keywords from the job posting to help your resume pass through applicant tracking systems (ATS).

Include Contactable References

Optionally, add a "References" section with the names, titles, and contact information of professional references.

Save in a Common Format

Save your resume in a common format such as PDF to ensure it maintains its formatting when viewed by potential employers.

Follow Application Instructions

Submit your resume as instructed in the job posting, whether it's through an online application system, email, or a physical copy.

Remember that your resume is a dynamic document that should evolve as your career progresses. Continuously update it with new skills, experiences, and achievements to keep it current and effective.
