What Are Adverbs?

Adverbs are words that modify verbs, adjectives, or other adverbs. They provide additional information about an action or state.

Types of Adverbs:

  • Adverbs of Manner (how): quickly, carefully, beautifully
  • Adverbs of Time (when): yesterday, today, soon
  • Adverbs of Place (where): here, there, everywhere
  • Adverbs of Frequency (how often): always, never, sometimes
  • Adverbs of Degree (to what extent): very, too, quite


General Rules for Adverb Placement

While adverb placement can vary depending on the type of adverb and the sentence:

  • Before the main verb:
    • She always eats breakfast.
    • They rarely watch TV.
  • After the verb (for manner, place, or time):
    • He speaks fluently.
    • They arrived yesterday.
  • At the beginning of the sentence (for emphasis):
    • Sometimes, I walk to work.
    • Quickly, he finished his homework.
  • Between the auxiliary verb and the main verb:
    • She has already finished her homework.

Common Mistakes in Adverb Placement

  1. Misplaced Adverbs:
