What Are Adverbs?
Adverbs are words that modify verbs, adjectives, or other adverbs. They provide additional information about an action or state.
Types of Adverbs:
- Adverbs of Manner (how): quickly, carefully, beautifully
- Adverbs of Time (when): yesterday, today, soon
- Adverbs of Place (where): here, there, everywhere
- Adverbs of Frequency (how often): always, never, sometimes
- Adverbs of Degree (to what extent): very, too, quite
General Rules for Adverb Placement
While adverb placement can vary depending on the type of adverb and the sentence:
- Before the main verb:
- She always eats breakfast.
- They rarely watch TV.
- After the verb (for manner, place, or time):
- He speaks fluently.
- They arrived yesterday.
- At the beginning of the sentence (for emphasis):
- Sometimes, I walk to work.
- Quickly, he finished his homework.
- Between the auxiliary verb and the main verb:
- She has already finished her homework.
- We are always happy to help.
Common Mistakes in Adverb Placement
- Misplaced Adverbs:
Incorrect: He sings beautifully the song.
Correct: He sings the song beautifully. - Double Adverbs:
Incorrect: She always never eats fast food.
Correct: She never eats fast food. - Adverbs at the Wrong Position:
Incorrect: Quickly she finished her homework always.
Correct: She quickly finished her homework.
