Stative verbs Quiz

Improve your English with this engaging stative verbs quiz. Learn when to use know, believe, seem, want, and more – without confusing them with action verbs.

What Are Stative Verbs?

Stative verbs (also called state verbs) describe a condition, situation, or state of beingβ€”not an action. They often refer to:

  • Thoughts and opinions (e.g., know, believe, understand)
  • Emotions (e.g., love, hate, prefer)
  • Possession (e.g., have, own, belong)
  • Senses (e.g., smell, hear, taste when describing the state)
  • Appearance or existence (e.g., seem, appear, be)

Examples:

  1. βœ… I know the answer.
❌ I am knowing the answer.
  2. βœ… She loves chocolate.
❌ She is loving chocolate. (Unless in marketing: “I’m loving it!”)
  3. βœ… This book belongs to me.
❌ This book is belonging to me.

Important Rule:

Stative verbs are not usually used in the continuous (–ing) form, because they describe something that just is, rather than something that is happening.
