Filler Words: Ways to Avoid them
Improve your Vocabulary
Has anyone told you that you use too many filler words & you don't know what they mean? Check out this story to know more.
Filler words are words, sounds, or phrases used to "fill in" silences during communication, such as "umm," "you know," and others.
They are unnecessary because they add nothing to your message.
As a result, they reflect poorly on your communication skills.
Some Common Filler Words
1. uh/oh/ er-
2. totally/really
3. I guess/suppose
The first way to avoid filler words is to check the sentence and see if the meaning changes without them. If it remains the same, you can remove them.
For example
1. Do you really feel cold?
- Do you feel cold?
2. I suppose we are going there.
- We are going there.
In order to avoid using filler words while speaking, slow down your speech . It will help you plan before speaking and make you more confident.
A momentary pause can be more effective than using filler words.
It will help you reflect rather than making your speech meaningless.
