A clause is a group of words that has some grammatical relationship to one another and is used to express a grammatical concept, such as subject, object, complement or predicate.

Clause

An example of a clause:  The fast, red squirrel darted up a tree.  The subject of this clause is the squirrel, and the verb is 'darted'. This can also be called a simple sentence.

A phrase, is a group of words  that has some meaning but does not necessarily have any grammatical relationship to one another.

Phrase

An example of a phrase:  Filled with joy, the girl jumped up and down. Phrases can also describe verbs or adverbs by explaining how or why something happened.
